Swinging a wedge golf club is essential for mastering short game shots and achieving greater accuracy and control around the greens. Understanding the proper technique can help you hit high, soft shots that stop quickly and stay close to the pin. In this guide, we’ll cover the fundamentals of swinging a wedge, including setup, grip, stance, and swing mechanics.
Choose the right wedge
There are various types of wedges: pitching wedge (PW), gap wedge (GW), sand wedge (SW), and lob wedge (LW). Each has a different loft, which determines the trajectory and distance of the shot. Choose the right wedge for the specific situation you’re in, whether it’s a full swing, chip shot, or bunker shot.
Set up correctly
- Ball position: Place the ball in the center of your stance or slightly forward, depending on the desired trajectory.
- Feet position: Position your feet shoulder-width apart for a stable base. For shorter shots, narrow your stance.
- Alignment: Square your body to the target, ensuring your feet, hips, and shoulders are parallel to the target line.
Grip the club
Use a neutral or slightly weaker grip for better control and feel. The V-shape formed by your thumb and index finger on both hands should point toward your right shoulder (for right-handed golfers) or left shoulder (for left-handed golfers).
Control your stance
- Weight distribution: Place slightly more weight on your front foot (about 60%) to promote a downward strike on the ball.

Shift your weight to your front foot while maintaining your body position. Rotate your hips and shoulders toward the target. Allow your arms and club to follow naturally, keeping your wrists hinged until just before impact.
Strike the ball with a descending blow, making contact with the ball first and then the turf. Your hands should be slightly ahead of the clubhead at impact, creating a forward shaft lean for solid contact and optimal spin.
Continue to rotate your hips and shoulders through the shot, extending your arms fully towards the target. Finish with your weight on your front foot and your chest facing the target.
